On March 5, World Energy Efficiency Day is celebrated, with the purpose of reflecting, as well as creating awareness of the importance of the rational use of energy for the good of the human race, since, to continue its waste, this would bring irreparable consequences for the entire planet.

Origin of World Energy Efficiency Day

It all began in 1998, at an International Conference held in Austria where it was agreed to create a day that would be emblematic for the world, of the importance of caring for and making a conscious and responsible use of energy, which is vital for life.

At this meeting, they discussed creating strategies to expand energy diversification through other sources such as renewable energy and the reduction of fossil fuels.

Caring for the planet is the task of all human beings. On the occasion of the International Day of Energy Efficiency, the leading entity in technical, security and certification services worldwide, TÜV Rheinland, advises what small daily actions can be carried out to reduce the environmental impact without losing the quality of life.

In parallel with all government measures and actions carried out by large companies, citizens can collaborate daily with small acts. TÜV Rheinland, offers this series of tips to put into practice that, apart from supplying economic savings, help to protect the planet without losing quality of life:

• 10 energy efficiency tips to reduce your environmental impact

1. Improve lighting at home: It is recommended to put LED bulbs in lamps, spotlights, etc. that you have at home, since they are the most efficient on the market.
2. Automation in walkways: It is convenient to install presence detectors in hallways, garages or common areas so that the lights turn on and off automatically.
3. Reduce use: It is preferable to turn off electrical appliances when they are not in use, because in addition to reducing energy consumption, it helps to extend their useful life. An example is unplugging the mobile charger if it is no longer fulfilling its function.
4. Renew equipment: When there is a need to renew household appliances, it is advisable to buy those that have the energy efficiency label A +++.
5. Monitor the temperature of refrigerators: They consume about 30% of the electricity in homes. For this reason, it is important to correctly regulate its temperature (5ºC in the fridge and -18ºC in the freezer).
6. Maintain the appliances in good condition: Cleaning the filters or embedded dirt on the appliances contributes to energy savings.
7. Save water: The ideal is to shower instead of bathing and avoid using hot water when it is not necessary. If possible, install volumetric reducers in the shower and aerators in the taps.
8. Sunlight: Make the most of natural light in daily activities and thus, incidentally, be able to avoid an irrational use of artificial light.
9. Sustainable mobility: Whenever possible, it is preferable to move by public transport, bicycle, electric vehicles or on foot. In case of having to travel in private cars, it is recommended to optimise the trips.
10. Sensitise family, friends, colleagues …: Word of mouth always works. Raising awareness among those closest to them, without imposing or blaming, so that they change their daily habits to be more efficient helps to add to the fight against climate change.

According to Jessica Spain, Technical Head of Energy Efficiency at TÜV Rheinland, “climate change is one of the hot topics of the moment. Polar melts, less rain, increase in average temperature … are some of the environmental factors that have been altered in recent years. For this reason, March 5 is an ideal date to reflect on the rational use that we give to energy and act accordingly”.
