The theme of World Health Worker Week 2022 is Build the Health Workforce Back Better. Progress towards universal health coverage (UHC) requires strong health systems and health workers who are educated and empowered to provide the health services that meet population health needs.
Competency-based education is widely acknowledged as the benchmark for transforming education and training of the health workforce for improved population and health outcomes. However, it has the potential to improve the health of the community only in so far as it uses context-specific health issues to determine the desired outcomes.
With this webinar, WHO launches its Global Competency and Outcomes Framework towards UHC. In so doing, WHO sets out its recommended approach to competency-based education of health workers, focusing on those competencies and other education outcomes for health workers in primary health care with a pre-service training pathway of 12-48 months. The Global Competency and Outcomes Framework for UHC is designed with a population health needs focus, therefore providing a powerful approach through which to align education strategies in relation to the context, health systems and population health needs.

World Health Worker Week is a chance to mobilise support for frontline health workers and celebrate their work. The week also draws attention to the fact that the world simply does not have enough health workers, with the World Health Organisation estimating a shortage of 18 million health workers compared to the workforce needed to reach the Sustainable Development Goals.
Health workers often work in challenging conditions. Many do not have access to the supplies, support, and professional opportunities they need. For many, this also means a lack of access to clean water, appropriate sanitation, and adequate handwashing facilities needed for safe care delivery. Clean hands help health workers keep themselves and patients safe from infection; but a 2018 study found that 66% of health facilities in low and middle income countries lack soap and piped water for handwashing.
This week, the Global Handwashing Partnership is rounding up some of our key resources to help you advocate for improved hand hygiene in health facilities:

This advocacy pack includes: an advocacy brief, infographic, social media toolkit, data sheet, and talking points that can be adapted to convince decision makers to prioritise hand hygiene in your country or region.
